Travel commentary
Driving on highways for any distance often makes me think about 2 quotes from ani difranco
1- “We’ll ride off to California with my arms around your chest / I’ll keep my hands warm in your pockets / You can use the engine block”*
2- ” We’ll put up a wall between the houses and the highway so that / You can go your way, and / I can go my way”
* this one...

We approach an equinox
Tomorrow is an autumnal equinox, and there are a handful of things on my mind.
It being an equinox, I am reminded as always of daisy’s quote from The Great Gatsby about always waiting for the longest day of the year then missing it. I think that happened again to me this year, but I plan on not missing the equinox. I suppose this post is evidence of that right? That, and the season...

Ubuntu startup service control with upstart and...
So today i had my 3rd re-introduction to a handful of linux startup matters.
ubuntu works quite differently from the linuxes i know (redhat/centos) in the managment of startup processes. what i re-learned this afternoon i wanted to document for myself and others.
in linux-land i’ve grown to prefer lighttpd over apache. i don’t quite know why, but that’s what i’ve grown...

Back from vacation
I’m back in ann arbor after a 10day vacation. There’s nothing too significant about that, but I wanted to share some memories for posterity.
We stayed in a mini-cabin at michigan’s ludington state park. It’s a very nice park with trails, inland lake with swimming/boating, an expansive lake michigan beach, a lighthouse fun stuff.
There are 3 mini-cabins at the park and we...
Angel Food Cake →
So, angel food cake DOES have flour in it, it’s just half as much as a regular cake. It’s oil/fat that it doesn’t have any of.
A small debate that I’ve been having with my self/wife this angelfood cake season.
You seem cool for a naked chick in a booth
Let’s be pals someday (in...

internet at work and websense
So, at my place of employ the internet filtering product “websense” is run. This product i know tracks how much “time” any user spends using the network, and it also blocks access to sites with known inappropriate content, for instance i can’t pull up the http://www.randallknives.com/ website, because it is categorized as “Weapons” (i was trying to figure...

wikipedia humor
so i was just listening to Vampire Weekend’s song Oxford Comma.
In a conversation once an acquaintance who’d just gone to see them was remarking how it was humorously awesome that they had a song titled that. I know that i’ve hit up wikipedia to figure out what an oxford comma is (sorry, i’m not a writer/a linguist/an english major/ivy league educated and I haven’t...

Make your own corned beef in Ann Arbor
So this post has been a LONG time in coming. Now that it’s finally vacation, and i don’t have a bunch of responsibilities i figure now’s about time that i share.
in March for my birthday/St. Patrick’s day party we decided to try and make our own corned beef. we used a recipe that i think was found in a Martha Steward Living magazine or home or something like that. At...

BMW 325xi lightbulb change
so, if anyone on the internets has a BMW 325 i have 2 tips for changing a blown headlight. Mine’s a 2001, and just has standard halogen bulbs, not the HID lazer cannon type things.
What no one seems to mention anywhere is that there is a retainer clip that rotates around the lightbulb holder. So those tabs that stick out are the pieces of the retainer clip that you want to focus on trying...
mapping the journey
We’re traveling from Ann Arbor, MI to Contoocook, NH this weekend. I was just confirming directions via my til now favorite mapping service maps.google.com
When i punched in my origin and destination it chose a meandering route i’ve never considered before. it also seemed to add an extra hour to my expected travel time.
To check out whether i was going crazy i pulled up mapquest and...
